It’s about that time that I can give a definitive answer when asked what the best new show of the season is. Mid-season might change this, but for the fall season, there’s no contest. The contest is feeling very much left out, because True Blood is so ahead of all the other shows that it’s actually pointing back and laughing at them. If I didn’t love the show so much, it might be mean, it’s so much better than the rest of the shows. And that’s saying a lot, because Life on Mars is damn good, and The Ex-List and Fringe also had their strong moments. But True Blood is just quality television, and this week was one of the best. Definitely the runner up to “Cold Ground” for the best of the series.
The conflict, which has been heating up since day one, is now boiling under the surface of every scene. Every oh-my-god moment (something other shows seem to be using for the sake of oh-my-god moments) have catastrophic impacts on all of the characters, moving the story forward in unpredictable and exciting ways. Pretty much everything that’s been amazing about this show recently is at play here, from great Sookie moments, to more sympathetic Jason scenes with the vampire, to a really horrifying Bill scene, to badass Lafayette, it’s all here.
Very, very well done. There’s only two episodes left, and as much as I’m looking forward to the very promising mid-season to roll around… how the hell am I gonna do without True Blood?
9/10
