Life on Mars
Season One
Episode Four
“Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadows”
Written by David Wilcox
Directed by Alex Zakrzewski
Didn’t get a chance to watch last week’s Life on Mars until now, and I’m really glad I waited. With nothing to follow on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, it’s a relief that I had this gem recorded on my DVR. If you haven’t started watching this show, now’s the time to start because it’s getting freaking good. In the most emotional yet, Sam Tyler (cop from the present thrown into the past) runs into his young mother who is stuck in the middle of a tricky situation with some gangsters. The plot hinges so well off this conflict, showing off how skilled these writers really are. This personal conflict of Sam’s (which stemmed from a seemingly common altercation on the street) eventually exploded into something that had effects on pretty much every main character in the cast as well as the overall arc of the series. It works as a standalone police procedural mystery of the week, too, which will make it easy for newcomers to jump in and get a taste of the show.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. I hate police procedurals, but this totally transcends that genre, and it’s more than just the sci-fi aspect. It’s character driven and just a damn smart show.
8/10
