GET AMPED… for the midseason
So far, the Fall 2008 season has been… okay. Heroes has been unexpectedly uneven, Sanctuary–one of the ones I was excited for–pretty much blows, and Fringe bounces from terrible to stellar in the blink of an eye. On the other hand, True Blood has been increasingly fantastic, Pushing Daisies is maintaining the quality of the first season, The Office has been good, The Ex-List is consistently entertaining, and Supernatural is delivering its best season yet. For every disappointment, there’s a shiny happy side… but that also works the other way around, which really evens this season out. I’m betting that, starting at the midseason point, that problem is going to be gone. Like I did in preparation for the Fall 2008 season, here is a list of things we’ve got to look forward to, starting January 2009.
1. Dollhouse. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re either dead–might want to look into that–or worse… a fan of only reality television. Joss Whedon–creator of the best television, there is, period, end of talk, good talk–comes back to television with a new show starring Eliza Dushku. It’s already infamous–like 24, it shut down production to improve the scripts, which sent Whedonites, myself included, into a nervous frezy. Because we know how FOX treated Whedon’s last new show, Firefly. But FOX and Joss alike reassured us that they’re confident in Dollhouse… and it’s by far the most anticipated new show of the year. Can January come any sooner?
2. Cupid. Rob Thomas–no, not the singer–of Veronica Mars fame resurrects his critically acclaimed 1998-1999 show thanks to ABC. With a new cast and a slightly updated storyline, Thomas is excited to give his show another go… but not nearly as excited as television fans are to have him back.
3. Lost. How are the Oceanic Six going to get back on the Island? What happened to Locke? What’s the deal with the time issue, and how the hell did the island poof? Who really died and who’s going to pull a Gandalf? After the shorter fourth season, we’re all ready for a full seventeen episode season of Lost.
4. Party Down. Another new show from Rob Thomas. He’s serving as creator and executive producer, handing off show-runner duties to John Enbom. Annnnnnd Paul Rudd is involved in this biznatch. It’s, and I quote, “a scripted half-hour comedy about a six-pack of would-be stars who work for a catering company–for mixers, parties, “video porn awards”–while chasing their elusive first big break.” Coming to STARZ in the first quarter of 2009.
5. 24. It’s been a long time coming. We’ve got a two hour prequel to tie us over until January, but fans are hungrier than ever after a year and a half of waiting. This better be no less than what it’s been hyped up to be–the best season of 24 yet.
6. The United States of Tara. The show-runner/creator is Diablo Cody. The co-creator/producer is Steven Spielberg. It’s described as Weeds meets Sybil. C’mon, how can that sound any better!?
7. The Office spinoff. I’m skeptical that it stars Amy Poehler, but meh, we’ll see. Greg Daniel’s is as involved with this new show as he is with The Office, and it won’t be a true spin-off, in that the only shared factor will be the tone and the whole mockumentary thing.
We shall see!
