REVIEW FOR

TRUE BLOOD
Episode Five
“Sparks Fly Out”
Written by Alexander Woo

True Blood isn’t just TV that doesn’t suck.  True Blood rocks.

It seems as if the show proves me wrong on a weekly basis.  The moment I decide that the show will probably stay good but never get great, the next episode is great.  With that out of the way, I was confident that the biggest flaw of the show was casting the ever stiff Stephen Moyer as vampire Bill Compton… and then we get this episode.  This insanely well done episode, that takes the show in directions I couldn’t have predicted.  A main character dies here.  Sookie tries to move on from Bill by making a date with Sam, who has more to him than meets the eye (or telepathic sense).  Most shocking?  Stephen Moyer does damn good.

In this revealling episode, in which Bill stands before an audience of humans and tells them war stories, the viewers at home get their own private history of the vampire… through a shocking and tragic flashback that shows how and why he was turned into a vampire.  Moyer does a fantastic job portraying all of the mixed emotions leading up to and following his turn.  Anna Paquin is still the best part of the overall show, but for this episode, the highlight was definitely Billy boy.

Another.  Fantastic.  Episode.

We’re just lucky that a) Moonlight is cancelled so the real vamps can come out and play and 2) that True Blood has already been renewed for a second season.  Long live HBO!

8/10
