Movie Review: Pineapple Express
Not much going on in TV Land tonight, so I’ll broaden the scope a bit for tonight’s entry and tackle our old friend the silvery screen. Nah, not literally. That never works out well.
No matter how Tropic your Thunder or how Dangerous your Bangcock (thatswhatshesaid) is… forget it! Forget all of it! And hop on the Pineapple Express.
Yeah, sorry, I just spend two and a half hours watching a filmed play of Shakespeare’s Othello, so I’m in “entertain myself” mode. And it’s realllllly hard to pull out of that when you get into it deep(thatswhatshesaid).
…Sorry.
On with the review.
Judd Apatow’s productions haven’t really impressed me recently. YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN was painful to watch and STEP BROTHERS was a mess of a movie that was pretty much two of the least funny comedy actors in Hollywood beating each other up. So as good as the Apatow produced FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL was, by the time I saw “Pineapple Express,” I was beginning to forget why I loved Apatow movies at all. Well, “Pineapple Express” definitely reminded me why.
Writer/actor Seth Rogen is funny as ever in this stoner/action flick that just doesn’t let up. I found myself literally laughing out loud at every moment. Fact is, I would have been embarrassed for laughing so hard at a public theatre… but everyone was cracking up. Like FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and SUPERBAD before it, this is definitely one of those movies that will have you and your friends talking about the quotable one-liners and crazy scenes long after the credits have rolled. As hilarious as Seth Rogen’s performance is—and it’s without a doubt his best one yet—his writing is even better.
I wouldn’t say it’s better than the aforementioned FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL or SUPERBAD, because it’s such a different movie. It’s definitely more similar in tone to them than the other comedies (read as: travesties) of this summer, such as the abysmal THE LOVE GURU and STEP BROTHERS. The only thing that’s different is that while this movie does have some somewhat emotional scenes, it never gets to the level where it really touches you. But the thing is, it doesn’t try to. It’s a straight forward action/comedy about two stoners in a bad situation that’s made worse by their collective (but charming) stupidity.
It’s an easy contender for a spot in the Top Five Movies of 2008, and will certainly make you laugh until you cry, whether you’re familiar with the green stuff or not.
9/10
